A Special LIVE Performance from Geoffrey Doig-Marx

A Special LIVE Performance from Geoffrey Doig-Marx

What makes Rene Soto Gallery special is our commitment to expose viewers to art in all its forms. For example, the upcoming September Opening Reception will feature performance art by NYC-based GDM. He is bringing us a live body painting experience! To get an idea of what this looks like, click to view the video below.

About Geoffrey Doig-Marx

Geoffrey Doig-Marx (GDM) grew up in the Albany area. At age fifteen, he was removed from his home and left to live in runaway shelters and group homes. In the mid 1980s, he moved to New York City and began to pursue a career in dance, musical theatre, and choreography. Since, he has appeared in national tours of the Actors’ Equity Association, and regional productions of West Side Story, Pippin, A Chorus Line, Dames at Sea, Cabaret, La Cage aux Folles, Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar, and many more.

For his day job, GDM teaches at Marymount Manhattan College, Montclair State University, and ARB’s Princeton Ballet School, but he still finds time to be active in the dance community. He is a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, an associate member of The Society of Directors and Choreographers, and founder of The Mantis Project Dance Company.

Additionally, he has made a name for himself as a visual artist. He specializes in abstract portraiture, creating figures with prominent facial features, set off by bold colors — from warm tangerine to cool chartreuse — and thick black and white borderlines.

“I don’t like a lot of art. I only have two pieces in my home. A GDM and a Hirschfeld.
– Chita Rivera

Noche de Poesía y Más Returns in August

Noche de Poesía y Más Returns in August

Noche de Poesía y Más returned to the gallery on Sunday, August 5th, bringing new faces along with it. We were excited to attract poets and poetry fans, and hope that this will become a standing event, so that literary artists know we have space for them, too! The events are free, open to the public, and welcome readings from members of the audience.

If you would like to sharpen your skills before sharing your writing, or just want to be a part of a community of writers, consider joining the Poesía y Más meetup group. They meet once per month on Sundays. Contact arsbitacora@gmail.com or find them on Facebook here.

“Our goal is to bring together artists of all genres, especially new ones, to share their work with each other and build community. Opportunities to exhibit are the key to artists’ achievement.”
